PMMB

In January 2015, someone reported the Philosophy Metametablog to Google for "spam activity" (this report was, of course, spurious), and Google shut down the blog with an option to re-open it. We have revisited that decision, and have opted at this time to reinstate the PMMB in a limited capacity. There will be occasional open threads, and the archives are once again available. If sockpuppetry and defamation remain a serious problem, we will disable comments altogether.

Readers looking for open discussion forums may find Brian Leiter's regular open threads and the Mockingbirds subreddit useful.

  1. Why re-open? What's wrong with the M3 blog?

    1. Mostly everything. It's boring and the traffic never really got going.

    2. At its height, the PMMB was getting 2500 unique visitors per day. M3 has never reached that. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of that heavy traffic was involved with flame wars and defamation...

  2. What is the URL for the M3 blog?

    1. The fact that someone from PMMB doesn't even know the address for PM3M goes miles toward explaining a lot of things.

    2. Stop being an elitist jerk, 8:56. Just because there were more... I don't really care. You're all weird. Later.

  3. Feminist philosophers won't publish this comment, so I'll post it here:

Elizabeth Barnes/magicalersatz assures us that "‘A Rape On Campus’ Was A Failure Of Journalism". What I don't understand is why it is not also a failure on the part of "Jackie". Jackie repeatedly lied to a reporter. This much is clear. Isn't that a failure (a moral failure, for example)? There's plenty of blame to go around, it seems to me. Blame is not a zero-sum game; so blaming Jackie for lying doesn't detract from the serious lapses in journalism on the part of Rolling Stone editors and Sabrina Rubin Erdely.

    1. Nooo..... please don't post it anywhere. If we could just stop talking about UVA/rape culture/Barnes, that'd be such an improvement.

  5. Maybe Jackie wasn't lying. There are alternative explanations, some consistent with her having been raped, and some consistent with her not having been raped. She might have been raped or abused, and have become so traumatized that her memory was a mess and she got confused and messed up dates, names and places. She might be sufficiently mentally ill that she confused reality with fantasy, even negative fantasy. We do not know enough about Jackie to say that she was deliberately misleading the reporter: memory is amazingly fallible, people get stuff wrong all of the time, trauma makes this worse, and some people honestly remember stuff that just didn't happen.
